Message from the Mayor

Welcome to Orange City

Mayor

      Greetings from Mayor Tom Laputka,

When I think of Orange City, I envision a community that encompasses a small town ambiance and world class opportunity; I’m sure you agree. We are all lucky to be able to call this place our home.

Council is poised and ready to go this year, as we are optimistic about 2012. We welcome our two new Council Members, Michael Wright and Ron Saylor, District one and District two representatives, to the dais. City Council will soon be working together to establish priorities and goals for our future, making Orange City an even greater place to live, work and play.

A great place to shop. As the commercial hub of Southwest Volusia County, our businesses continue to grow. Hibbett Sports and the Drafthouse both recently opened, with Hobby Lobby, Dollar General, and Smallcakes, soon to follow. The prestigious Florida Hospital Fish Memorial recently expanded its fifth floor, which added 36 private patient-care rooms. The City itself continues to expand. In 2011 we annexed in 9 new properties, totaling over 43 acres.

A great place to visit. City parks continue to grow and improve. The Waggin’ Trail Dog Park opened in mid-December, allowing residents, and their canine companions, a new place to run around and play. Veterans Memorial Park and Valentine Park received new playground equipment, which is ADA compliant, allowing more accessibility for our community’s children. In preparation for the hot Florida summer, our very popular splash pad was resurfaced. Dickinson Park will continue to be the home of our monthly Movie in the Park, which will resume February 3.

I am a firm believer that communication is vital in keeping our City remarkable. If you have any thoughts, ideas, comments or concerns, do not hesitate to send me an email regarding them at tlaputka@ourorangecity.com

Serving our community,
Mayor Tom Laptuka
